Is Outpatient Treatment Right For Me?

Creekside - Is Outpatient Treatment Right For Me

When you’re struggling with your mental health, deciding what kind of treatment you need can feel like another difficult decision. You may know you need more support than weekly therapy can provide, but the idea of staying in a hospital may not feel necessary or realistic.

That’s where outpatient treatment can help.

Outpatient programs give you access to structured mental health care while allowing you to return home at the end of the day. Depending on your symptoms and needs, outpatient treatment may provide the right level of support to help you feel more stable, learn healthier coping skills, and work toward feeling like yourself again.

Why Choose Outpatient Treatment?

Outpatient care can be a good option when you need more support than traditional therapy but do not require 24-hour supervision or inpatient care.

Your mental health symptoms may be interfering with your relationships, work, school, or daily responsibilities, but you may still be able to safely manage life at home. You may also be stepping down from inpatient treatment and need continued support as you adjust to being back in your regular environment.

The right level of care depends on your symptoms, safety, diagnosis, support system, and overall needs. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, outpatient treatment can include more intensive programs such as partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient care, which provide several hours of treatment while allowing you to return home.

What Are the Benefits of Outpatient Treatment?

One of the biggest advantages of outpatient care is that you can continue living at home while receiving treatment. You don’t have to completely step away from your family, responsibilities, or familiar surroundings.

Depending on your schedule and treatment plan, you may also be able to continue working or attending school. This can make treatment easier to fit into your life while still giving you the structure and support you need.

Outpatient care also gives you opportunities to practice what you learn in treatment in your everyday environment. You can work on coping skills during therapy and then begin using those skills at home, at school, at work, or in your relationships.

You may also appreciate the flexibility. Instead of spending the night in a treatment setting, you attend scheduled programming and return home afterward. This can help you maintain important routines while still making your mental health a priority.

That doesn’t mean outpatient treatment is less serious or less intensive. Programs such as partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment can provide a significant amount of structure, therapy, and support. The goal is to give you the level of care that fits your current needs.

What Can Outpatient Treatment Help With?

Outpatient mental health treatment may be appropriate for a variety of psychiatric conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and other mental health disorders.

Treatment may include individual and group therapy, medication management, counseling, and opportunities to develop healthier ways to respond to stress and difficult emotions. The National Institute of Mental Health explains that psychotherapy or talk therapy can help people manage troubling thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while improving daily functioning and quality of life.

At Creekside Behavioral Health, outpatient treatment is designed for adults and youth who need structured support but do not require 24-hour inpatient care.

Outpatient Treatment at Creekside Behavioral Health

Creekside Behavioral Health offers outpatient programs at its main campus in Kingsport, Tennessee, as well as its outpatient location in Knoxville.

Depending on your needs, you may participate in a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

  • PHP provides a structured treatment environment for adults and adolescents ages 13 to 17 who need intensive support but do not need 24-hour inpatient care. Patients attend five days a week for approximately six hours each day before returning home in the evening.
  • IOP sometimes called outpatient day treatment or part-time treatment, provides structured therapeutic support while allowing you to maintain more of your usual work, school, and home responsibilities.

You may enter an outpatient program directly following an assessment and referral, or you may transition into outpatient care after completing inpatient treatment.

Creekside also works to make that transition as smooth as possible. If you receive inpatient care, your treatment team can work with outpatient services and community providers to develop an aftercare plan that supports your continued progress at home and in the community.

How Do You Know If Outpatient Treatment Is Right for You?

If you are not sure whether your symptoms have reached a point where you need more support, consider how your mental health is affecting your everyday life. Are you having trouble keeping up with work or school? Are your relationships suffering? Are you struggling to manage anxiety, depression, mood changes, or other symptoms on your own?

If your symptoms are interfering with your ability to function, it may be time to talk with a mental health professional.

At the same time, outpatient treatment isn’t appropriate for everyone. If you’re experiencing a severe mental health crisis or cannot safely care for yourself, inpatient treatment may be more appropriate. An assessment can help determine which level of care is best for you.
